The device is powered by artificial intelligence and works on Bluetooth speakers.
The viralized invention of the Argentine programmer, musician and writer Roni Bandini can be interpreted as a great service for the community: a machine, driven by artificial intelligence, capable of block the speakers that play reggaeton wirelessly.
Reggaeton is a popular style of music, of Caribbean origin and African-American influence, which, according to the Royal Spanish Academy, “is characterized by a recitative style and a syncopated rhythm produced electronically”, but which can be annoying to others if listened to at very high volume.
That’s why Bandini managed to invent ‘Reggaeton Be Gone’. without having to say a word.
“To explain it, maybe I have to talk first about my neighbor. It turns out that I have a neighbor who usually listens to that music (…) with a huge Bluetooth speaker attached to my wall,” the inventor explained in statements reproduced by the press.
Although he admits that a “normal” person would ring the doorbell and politely ask his neighbor to lower the volume or change his musical taste, he preferred to opt for another alternative due to his poor “social skills.”
For this reason, he says: “I came up with the idea of making a machine with AI capable of recognizing when reggaeton is playing on my neighbor’s speaker and attacking it via Bluetooth.”
The system is inspired by the old TV-B-Gone device, which worked years ago to turn off annoying televisions in bars and restaurants.
In this case, it monitors the song playing and compares it with an artificial intelligence model to determine if it belongs to the reggaeton genre. If so, try attacking the bluetooth connected speaker. The idea is, in the best of cases, to disconnect the speaker or interfere with listening.
“It should be illegal”
In its blogBandini explains step by step his invention and what happened when he tested it with his neighbor the next morning: “Within the other wall, the device did not disconnect its speaker, but it generated enough interference to the point where the neighbor changed the location “It’s definitely not a success, but it’s not a defeat either,” he explained.
The ingenious device presents ethical and legal dilemmas. In some countries, the possession and use of frequency jammers to interfere with communications signals, such as Wi-Fi, GPS or Bluetooth networks, is prohibited.
“Before you tell me anything about it, I understand that jamming a neighbor’s speakers could be illegal, but, on the other hand, listening to reggaeton every day at 9:00 in the morning should definitely be illegal,” says the programmer.
