The pest comes along with pot and container plants from Mediterranean and Asian countries. The pest ant has also been found at many garden centers, says EIS Knowledge Center Insects.

A colony of pest ants has hundreds to thousands of queens that lay eggs. Once the pest ant has settled somewhere, the ant population grows at breakneck speed. The rather small ants crawl through the smallest holes and are almost impossible to get out of homes. The pest ants are native to Central Asia. They displace native insects here and are therefore considered an unwanted exotic.

Super colonies of the ants have since been found in Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Oldenzaal and Amersfoort, among others. EIS Insects Knowledge Center likes to receive reports of suspected ants in the hope of limiting the spread of the species. Since the pest ants are difficult to distinguish from native ants, people can also send some ants to EIS.
