The century-old restaurant that has attracted residents and tourists for years was far from full Thursday noon, according to CNN, when only two of the 30 available seats were occupied.
Despite its name, the Russian Tea Room has no connection with the eastern country and belongs to a New York financial group.
The restaurant is well aware that what is happening on the other side of the Atlantic affects its business, as evidenced by the message of support for Ukraine that they published on the homepage of their website. .
“For 95 years, the history of the New York institution has been deeply rooted in the discourse against communist dictatorship and for democracy. Just as the early founders, Soviet defectors displaced by the revolution, opposed Stalin’s Soviet Union, we oppose Putin and the people of Ukraine,” their message read.
Conversely, in another district of the Big Apple, a Ukrainian restaurant saw its attendance increase by 75% in just one week, Jason Birchard, owner of Veselka, told CNN.
