Lhe European Union prepares new sanctions and raises the tone of its condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On the eve of the start of a Council of Foreign Ministers that will study how to strengthen sanctions against Russia, the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell has strongly denounced Moscow’s aggression against the Ukrainian people:
“Russia is really committing many war crimes. Those are the words. We have to say it. What is happening in Mariupol is a huge war crime. Destroying everything, bombing and killing everyone indiscriminately. This is an appalling thing.” We have to condemn it in the strongest terms. This is a war crime, a massive war crime that is happening in Mariupol. The city is completely destroyed and people are dying.”
Borrell hinted that the most effective sanctions will be imposed, those related to energy.
