Jakarta –
Trillions cricket will appear in parts of the United States in enormous numbers, the likes of which have not been seen in decades and perhaps centuries.
Experts say people in the southeastern US will witness a rare sight. That’s because the ‘periodic’ cicadas, which usually appear once every 13 years, arrived at the same time as other cicadas that appear in a 17-year cycle this spring.
This black periodic insect with bulging red eyes can only be found in North America. The double appearance of periodical cicadas, known for their loud sounds, is a rare phenomenon and is thought to have last occurred 221 years ago in 1803.
University of Connecticut cricket expert John Cooley called the simultaneous invasion ‘cicada-geddon’. Sometimes mistaken for grasshoppers, the buzz of these insects can reach a volume of 110 decibels.
There are already clear signs of an impending invasion of Brood As the species with the largest geographic distribution, the XIX population is distributed in the Midwest region of the US.
Soon after emergence, cicadas from a different population, Brood XIII, will appear in Illinois. Population XIII only comes out every 17 years. Both populations of cicadas appearing at the same time is a rare event that will produce more cicadas.
“We see trillions of these amazing living organisms coming out of the Earth, climbing trees, and it’s a unique experience, a sight to behold. It’s like an entire alien species living under our feet and then a few years later coming up to say hello,” said the biophysicist Georgia Tech, Saad Bhamla.
According to researchers at the University of Connecticut, this year’s emergence of cicadas will cover so much territory that it is equivalent to the size of the US state of Delaware. “If we accept the estimate of one million cicadas per hectare and if the total area of periodic occurrence of cicadas is approximately the size of Delaware, then there would be more than a trillion cicadas involved,” the research states.
Crickets periodically seek vegetation around mature trees, where they can mate and lay eggs. They then go underground to eat the roots.
