You met Zbigniew Hojnacki at a recording session and started working before you had even spoken to each other. What are the basic principles of such an intuitive approach?

If time is limited, as it was in this case, it remains to rely on your intuition, listen to your partner and catch the thoughts that fly by at that moment. There is not much time left to plan what we will do. So we each took one sound, one idea from our instrument and put them in a neat pile.

How would you describe Hojnacka’s handwriting? How would you introduce your two collaborative pieces?

Basically, he is very expressive, percussionist – the foreground events of the soundscape are important to him. I, on the other hand, am characterized by long, watercolor-type strokes of sound, which, on the other hand, form a background scene. Of course, episodic roles change. Our first joint work, the piece “The Sounds from the Cave” reminds us of a story where a hobbit comes with an offer to go on a trip to an unknown land, and the second piece “Coffee Time” is reminiscing about this trip while sipping tea, coffee or other warm drink. By the way, the sound of Zbigniew’s coffee cup can also be heard in the recording.

What else is currently relevant to you in your musical life?

My solo program is currently updated. A new duet concert is also planned this summer, and work is currently underway on the album of “Lupas” and “Sinfonietta Rīga”, which will feature the music of Andras Buiķas, which was performed in February this year.

From October 6 to 8, the annual festival “Skaņu mežs” will take place in the cultural space Hanzas Perons (Hanzas iela 16a). Its first announced guest is composer and experimental musician Raven Chacon, who received the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Music. He will perform a solo performance and his music will also be performed by the string quartet Mivos. The opening event of the festival is also expected on September 30.
