What is the difference between introvert and extrovert?
Marloes Bouwmeester is expert on introversion. She wrote the book, among other things Obviously visible to introverts about. In addition, she coaches introverted professionals on how to present their knowledge and ideas in a group without forcing themselves.
Marloes knows better than anyone what the differences are between introverts and extroverts. For example, she mentions the way in which the two personalities deal with stimuli as one of the most important differences. “Introverts are more sensitive to stimuli and are more easily overstimulated. For example, they react more intensely to sounds, new people, but also caffeine.” Extroverts, however, need precisely those stimuli.
Another difference between the two personalities is where they get energy from. “Although introverts do have the need to meet people, they don’t get any energy from it. They just get tired of it.” What do introverts charge from? “Reflecting, being busy with their inner world.”
Finally, Marloes mentions the difference in which introverts and extroverts communicate. “Introverts think before they speak. They also often use careful language, such as ‘maybe’ or ‘maybe’. Not because they are insecure, but because they want to make sure that what they say is correct.”
Ambivert
Of course, the differences between introverts and extroverts are not always so black and white. There are many nuances between the two personalities. In addition, there is a third personality: the ambivert. “They do need reflection and time alone, but they can also get energy from meeting people.”
