Introduction of ‘Viva la Escuela’ Program Volunteers to Institutions in Boyacá Governorate’s Santa Rosa de Viterbo by Ministry of Education

Four rural campuses from two institutions were visited to present the teams that will be supporting teachers and students in their academic work.

Tunja, March 29, 2023. (UACP). The Secretary of Education, Elided Ofelia Niño Paipa, accompanied the Vice Minister of Secondary and Basic Education, Hernando Bayona Rodríguez, on his visit to Boyacá where he arrived with his work team to introduce the volunteers and accompany the ‘Viva la Escuela’ program ‘, which is carried out in the educational institutions “Carlos Arturo Torres” and “El Portachuelo” in Santa Rosa de Viterbo.

The volunteers will carry out the activities of their practices or internships and, in addition, they will support the implementation of educational strategies aimed at improving learning and school coexistence.

It was clarified that at no time will they replace the teacher in the classroom, and their role will be to support him in the implementation of his pedagogical process in the classroom.

The Vice Minister of Education, Hernando Bayona Rodríguez, indicated that they are reaching the rural institutions where this program is located, which seeks that university students with bachelor’s degrees and higher normalists, seniors from different universities in the country, attend those venues that have been a little forgotten by the State and that need a greater presence.

“We want to send that message with this program and we have been in four rural locations where the volunteers arrived and the balance is very positive, since they show that there is a great commitment to transformation, the program has great advantages of being able to take them to places where they would never have gone if it weren’t for this opportunity,” the official said.

He added that the rectors and teachers showed great satisfaction in having cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the universities so that these volunteers reach these places. It is making an impact where it should be without worrying about efficiency, but rather concerned that the boys and girls have people who come from other places to have other perspectives on life and increase their expectations.

In the country there are 631 volunteers who are in 231 offices in 39 municipalities. The teams are arriving these days at their places of work to be in the institutions for three months. As of April, the call for the next semester begins in which it is hoped to have 10,000 volunteers from the different universities.

“I am grateful to the universities and normal colleges that have been involved in the issue in an important way and that have put on the shirt so that the program works and so that their students can reach any part of the country,” said the vice minister.

The Secretary of Education, Elided Ofelia Niño Paipa, welcomed the volunteers and the vice minister who devised this strategy to reach rural centers with young people who have a learning methodology that will improve educational quality, especially in reading and writing.

“This collaboration will allow us to develop our “Pera de Oro” program that seeks to encourage children in the production of school textbooks and stories and in this way identify what they are thinking, what are the needs and what is the project of life they have. With pleasure we are here to support all the volunteers who are in Boyacá”, affirmed the official.

Fernando Niño, rector of the IET El Portachuelo, pointed out that he applauds this project, which is innovative, impressive, that they were waiting for it because these rural institutions require support and thanked the Vice Ministry of Education, the Government of Boyacá and the Secretary of Education of the department.

Volunteers from this institution were assigned to three locations: La Mesa, Quebrada Arriba and central, while IE Carlos Arturo Torres will be at the central, La Creciente and Cachavita locations.

Three volunteers arrive for each location whose role will be to guide, accompany and strengthen teachers and students, share significant experiences among the volunteers themselves because they have different profiles. The volunteers came from universities in different parts of the country.

“I am a spokesperson for the boys, girls, young people and parents of this rural institution that has grown and continues to grow, but all thanks to the support of the Government and the Ministry of Education because they are the ones who manage, mark out and are pending of institutional development”, affirmed the rector.

Daniela Sotomayor from the National Pedagogical University, a Visual Arts student, Hasbleidy Sánchez, from the same university and a student in Early Childhood Education, and Luisa Fernanda Antolínez from the Normal Superior of El Cerrito – Santander, Complementary Education student, are three volunteers who came to the department who chose from a group of possibilities throughout the country for the peace that is lived in the territory. They said that they feel happy to be in Boyacá and that the people received them with great affection and kindness.

“We want to be able to really learn what the rural school is and generate learning and be able to transmit it with the classes that we are going to have in these three months. We are going to hold dialogic gatherings to reinforce children’s learning, link parents and the community and be more emphatic regarding what meaningful learning is”, they specified.
