We’re excited to release The International 2023 Compendium. It’s different from previous compendiums, so we want to talk about how it works and why we made it that way.
As we said a couple of months ago, when we looked back at the game, it became clear to us that the Battle Passes absorbed all the content and limited the ability to release something custom throughout the year. We wanted to fix this, so a few months ago we made a conscious choice to release innovations more often and to make them more diverse. This year was full of experiments: we introduced a completely new behavior system, free items for the tenth anniversary, several gameplay updates, all kinds of sets from the community and more. This compendium is another example of something new.
Tournament features – tournament rewards
Each Dota update has a different goal, and part of the development process is choosing what to focus on. The update could be aimed at releasing cosmetic content or improving balance. The update may try to attract the largest possible prize pool. Instead, we decided to do something more specific: highlight the importance of the players, teams and skilled, high-quality play at The International. We focused on creating a set of tasks that will not only make watching the tournament fun, but also brighten up the time between matches.
That’s exactly what this year’s compendium is: a collection of challenges built around professional players and the tournament itself. We’ve brought back and improved some of our favorite features (like fantasy league and predictions), and introduced new activities, from light-hearted bingo to the seriously impressive Road to TI challenge.
All successes in the compendium bring you closer to receiving rewards. Like the quests, all of this year’s rewards are player- and tournament-related. These include The International 2023 interface style, permanent phrases for the chat wheel, a collectible copy of the aegis, and a variety of content for your profile showcase (more on that below), including team and player stickers.
Something for everyone
This year, we’ve made it our goal to release something for all players in every update, be it gameplay changes or new features. This update was no exception. It’s okay if you, like many others, love to watch the spectacular battles at The International, but are not familiar with the ancient legends of how RAMZES666 met the arrow, or do not know what kind of research Emo carried out on the use of the question mark. We also have something in store for you.
This update also includes Profile Showcases, a free feature for all players. Are you proud of your records, your sense of in-game fashion, or your only victory as an Invoker? You now have a canvas where you can display your many proud possessions. We could praise the update all day, but it’s better to see once, right? If you agree, go to update page and see as much as your heart desires.
What’s next
We are already working on future innovations affecting various parts of the game. We know you’re eager to learn more about upcoming balance changes, the next Arcana items, and more of our plans… But that will only happen once the champions raise their Aegis. In the meantime, Seattle once again welcomes the best players in the world, and we stand in anticipation. See you on the Road to The International.
At the time of publication, the game client update is not available for download. The update page via the link from the blog is not available.
