Introducing the Honda N-Van: A Cute and Compact Kei Car with Electric Power

In the Japanese market, the Honda N-Van is a constant among light commercial vehicles in the kei cars category. These are the cute little cars that the Japanese authorities reward you with tax breaks or discounts on fees and insurance. It is quite a challenge for the manufacturer, because they have to assemble the entire car on a floor plan 3.4 meters long and not even 1.5 meters wide. Thanks to this, truly smiling machines are created.

In order for a car to be classified as a kei car, it must not be powered by an engine larger than 660 cubic centimeters and 64 horsepower. However, electric cars are increasingly appearing in the given class. Although the Honda N-Van is primarily a transporter with an internal combustion engine, it is now also offered as an electric car. You wouldn’t know the difference from the outside, the only difference is the hole on the mask for the charging connector.

The parameters are still a secret, but Honda says that the applied battery is enough for a range of 210 kilometers. It takes about five hours to fully charge, and it can also be used as an external source of electricity to power various appliances. Let’s just remind you that the only electric car of the brand in Europe is the tiny Honda e, which, depending on the equipment, can travel 210 to 222 kilometers. Its price does not go below one million here, but in Japan it costs a little over CZK 600,000. I’m not mentioning this by accident, but let’s go in order.

Although it is primarily an affordable worker, the electric Honda N-Van will offer, for example, the possibility of remote access or, for the first time in the segment of light commercial vehicles, side head airbags. Because the battery used is thin, the space for passengers in both rows and the cargo area has not decreased in any way. On the contrary, the braking system has been strengthened, which in the case of an electric car will work with greater weight.

Honda will present the new product to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show, the first customers should see the car in the spring of next year. And how much for all this? The Japanese advertise a price starting at just under 155,000 CZK, i.e. significantly less than the price of the aforementioned “ečko”, but also direct competition among kei cars on the Japanese market. Something tells us this cute affair will be a hit at home!
