In order to introduce us to the Genesis electric range, the manufacturer invited us to New York where the G80 Electrified, GV70 Electrified and GV60 awaited us.
The GV60 is the only one of the three to have been initially designed as a full-fledged electric vehicle.
The G80 Electrified, GV70 Electrified and GV60 are not eligible for government subsidies.
The G80 Electrified offers the best range of the trio with 454 kilometers.
As of 2016, Genesis has yet to sell a single vehicle in the country. 18 months ago, the Korean luxury manufacturer’s range did not include any electric vehicles. It now has three and other models will be added shortly. It would be an understatement to say that this growth is dazzling and impressive. The Genesis brand has the wind in its sails and we can clearly see the strength of the industrial giant behind it.
In order to introduce us to the Genesis electric range, the manufacturer invited us to New York. The goal of the exercise was to travel to Philadelphia using these three electric vehicles in turn: G80 Electrified, GV70 Electrified and GV60. Here is the full report of our electric roadtrip.

The day before our departure, we were able to visit the famous Genesis House in the Meatpacking district of New York on the banks of the Hudson River. You should know that it is much more than a dealership. In fact, we could describe the place as being the showcase of all the know-how of the Korean manufacturer. It is a large and airy place where the vehicles in the range are presented. You can also discover the multiple body colors and interior textures. We definitely have the ambition to provide an experience to those who walk through the door. In addition to a tea room and a vast library, the space features nothing less than a Michelin-starred restaurant. Genesis really wants to impress with this place.
It was at the wheel of the GV70 Electrified that we left New York to head towards Johnson Park on the banks of the Raritan River. It was definitely not the most enchanting part of the journey given the rush hour. Although we were leaving New York in the morning, the traffic jams were intense. Much more intense than those in Montreal. The Genesis GV70 Electrified has the advantage of offering a high level of luxury, which makes the trip more enjoyable.

It was in Flemington, New Jersey that our adventure with the GV70 Electrified ended. According to data provided by the manufacturer, it can travel up to 383 kilometers on a single charge. At the end of this first portion of the journey, the on-board computer displayed consumption of 17.3 kWh/100 kilometers. It should be noted that it is equipped with two electric motors which develop power and torque totaling 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. This data is exactly the same for the GV60.

From Flemington to New Hope we drove the G80 Electrified. Let us point out that we drove on secondary roads along the Delaware River and that the scenery definitely gave us the taste of settling there. From a very personal point of view, we find the G80 Electrified the most elegant of the trio. It will take a keen eye to distinguish it from the gasoline one and, we have to admit that we like it. Although it is slightly less powerful than the other two members of the Genesis electric family, the G80 Electrified enjoys better range. In fact, with a single charge, it is possible to travel up to 454 kilometers. Once at its destination, the on-board computer showed consumption of only 14.1 kWh/100 kilometers. It is important to point out that the weather conditions were particularly advantageous.
The G80 is an excellent tourer. It is spacious, comfortable and well soundproofed. Without flinching, we would have completed the entire journey behind the wheel.

The third portion of this journey was completed at the wheel of the Genesis GV60. Built on the E-GMP platform, it was first designed to be an electric vehicle while the GV70 Electrified and G80 Electrified were initially gasoline vehicles which were later adapted. Its style is definitely polarizing, but its acceleration is lightning when you activate the Boost function. Genesis claims it can travel 378 kilometers on a charge.
After a stop at the Genesis dealership in Cherry Hill for its official inauguration, we ended our trip in Philadelphia, not far from the famous staircase from the movie Rocky.

Unfortunately, the program planned by the manufacturer did not provide for any recharging. With a gasoline vehicle, filling the fuel tank is not an issue. Except for the invoice that accompanies everything. On the other hand, with an electric vehicle, charging is definitely an issue. In Quebec, we are fortunate to count on the precious Hydro-Québec Electric Circuit. However, the situation is very different elsewhere on the continent. Although many automobile manufacturers have announced in recent months that it will be possible to recharge their electric models on Tesla terminals which are present almost everywhere in North America, certain challenges remain. Unfortunately, we were not able to experience this inevitable portion of an electric roadtrip.
Genesis Unveils GV80 Coupe and Facelifted GV80
A promising future
The future couldn’t be more promising for the Genesis brand, which is booming. In fact, the manufacturer is about to improve its range of SUVs by introducing the GV80 Coupe in the coming months. This is a version of the GV80 with a truncated rear part. What’s more, we expect the unveiling of a three-row electric SUV that would follow from the Kia EV9 and the Hyundai Ioniq 7. In short, plenty of surprises in the months to come.
