San Roque
The Culture Delegation of the San Roque City Council launches the First Andalusian Music Meeting of San Roque 2023 (AndalMus), which has the artistic direction of the San Roque cellist Javier López Escalona. This is a biannual initiative that aims to introduce young people to the values of Andalusian classical music as well as the work of composers from the region from all eras.
The AndalMus programming began today, Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at the Palace of the Governors, where the official opening will take place. At 6:30 p.m. and on the same stage, the cycle “Discover the orchestra from within” will begin, a series of rehearsals by the Andalusian Orchestra open to the general public.
At 9:00 p.m., and at the Juan Luis Galiardo Theater, the first of the concerts by guest artists will take place, led by the flutist Rafael Ruibérriz de Torres, who will perform with the string quintet made up of the violinists Ignacio Ábalos and José Miguel Herrera (violin), the viola of María José Alcázar and the cellos of Aldo Mata and Javier López Escalona.
This concert, under the title “Flute and strings in 18th and 19th century Andalusia”, will be made up of works from the baroque and classicism, with pieces by Antonio Rodil or Barbieri. Regarding the solo flutist, Rafael Ruibérriz de Torres was principal flutist in The Wallfish Band and is currently flutist of the Baroque Orchestra of Seville. He combines his activity as a chamber musician and soloist with cultural management.
As for Friday the 13th, at 12 noon there will be another rehearsal by the Andalusian Orchestra at the Palace of the Governors, while at 6:00 p.m. the “Young Musical Promises of Andalusia” competition will begin at the Juan Luis Galiardo Theater ”, with the performances of the pianist Juan José Sevilla Valencia, the Isbilya Quartet, the guitarist Carlos Pérez and the violin and piano duo Ruiz-García. The last performance on Friday, also at the theater, will be that of guest pianist Patricia Arauzo at 10:00 p.m.
On Saturday, meanwhile, the two scheduled activities will take place at the Juan Luis Galiardo Theater. At 6:00 p.m. there will be the second and last day of the Young Musical Promising Competition of Andalusia, with performances by the Castel Duo, cello and piano; by Astrea Quintet, for strings and piano; by the pianist Pablo Pavón; and the Glauka Quintet, for wind instruments. In addition, at 10:00 p.m. there will be a concert by guest artists Javier López Escalona and Elio Coria, on cello and piano.
Finally, on Sunday there are two activities planned, both in the theater. At 12:00, and under the title “(Re)premieres of Unpublished Andalusian Music, there will be a concert by the Andalusian Orchestra and the cellist Alto Mata, which will include an unpublished symphony by the Cádiz composer Francisco de Asís Gil (1829- 1861). At 1:30 p.m. there will be the awards ceremony for the Young Musical Promising Contest of Andalusia, which will close the I AndalMus.
It should be noted that the contest will count on the following musicians as members of the jury: cellist Javier López Escalona, pianist Elio Coria, cellist Aldo Mata, pianist Patricia Arauzo, flutist Rafael Ruibérriz de Torres, violinist Ignacio Ábalos, and fortepianist Laura Granero.
The following prizes will be awarded: Muñoz Molleda, Gerónimo Giménez, Francisco de Asís Gil and Manuel de Falla, the latter awarded by the public attending the concerts. The first prize will consist of a diploma, an artistic residency in the second edition of Andalmus, interviews in four media outlets, a professional recording, a professional artistic dossier, and incorporation into the AndalMus Music Catalog. The second will consist of an accreditation diploma, a concert in the second edition of AndalMus, interviews in two media, an artistic dossier and incorporation into the aforementioned catalogue. The third, an accrediting diploma, a scholarship for the San Roque Music Courses, an interview in a media outlet, a professional photo session and incorporation into the catalogue. Finally, the public prize will consist of an accreditation diploma, a concert at the San Roque Suena Festival and an interview in a media outlet.
In the program we have been able to count on the artistic director of the event, the San Roque cellist Javier López Escalona, who at 27 years old has already achieved a good number of successes and has flown with his cello to many parts of the world, “I have been lucky to have a career at this age with a lot of content. I am very happy to have had all these opportunities throughout this time. Now this opportunity arises here, in the Campo de Gibraltar, in San Roque, with this event, AndalMus , which, as you say, wants to say that Andalusian music has something to say today and also the young musicians of Andalusia, we need them to have something to say.
