Introducing the Fairphone 5: A Truly Environmental and Ethical Smartphone with Impressive Upgrades

The Dutch company Fairphone, which promotes a truly environmental and also ethical approach to the production of smartphones and other electronics, today presented the brand new Fairphone 5. The novelty with a relatively ambitious price of 700 euros (less than 17 thousand crowns) brings several important improvements compared to the previous generation, but also in software support completely unseen in the world of Android.

New display and 50 Mpx selfie camera

Last year’s Fairphone 4 was often criticized for its display with wide bezels, which was also only an IPS LCD type. In this regard, we have seen a major improvement with the Fairphone 5, as we now have the honor of a 6.46″ OLED panel with a resolution of 2,700 × 1,224 pixels, a maximum brightness of up to 880 nits and a refresh rate of 90Hz. An important novelty is also a more modern aperture for selfie camera instead of the previous drop-shaped cut-out, which already looked quite outdated.Of course, the increased resistance is ensured by the 0.7 mm thick protective glass Gorilla Glass 5.

In the opening for the selfie camera, there is a sensor with an above-standard resolution of 50 Mpx. It is a 1/2.76″ Samsung JN1 sensor with a pixel size of 0.64 micrometers, folding 4 pixels into 1. It will also please the support of video recording in 4K with 30 FPS on all cameras.

However, 50 Mpx sensors can also be found on the back. The primary sensor is a 1/1.56″ Sony IMX800 with 1 micrometer pixels. There’s also optical stabilization, with the aperture at a fairly standard f/1.88. The second camera on the back is an ultra-wide-angle lens with a range of 117 degrees (and resolution 50 Mpx), which has automatic focus and is also used for taking macro pictures from a distance of as little as 2.5 cm. The third cut-out in the photo module is used for the ToF sensor for better orientation in space.

An unconventional chipset with unprecedentedly long support

The new Fairphone is powered by an “industrial” Qualcomm QCM 6490 processor, which should be comparable in performance to the Snapdragon 778G. It is suitable according to qualcomm.com for example, for IoT solutions, but also on-board cameras for cars

The reason for its deployment is the very long software support of the chipset as such, which also results in the very long software support of the phone. The manufacturer has committed to software support the Fairphone 5 at least until 2031, i.e. at least 8 years. If all goes according to plan, support is planned for a total of 10 years, with users guaranteed five major operating system updates (the phone will arrive with Android 13). That, and the fact that the device is made from 70% recycled materials by workers who are paid adequate wages, makes the Fairphone 5 a truly unique device. The manufacturer even offers the option to send their old device in the same box in which it delivers the Fairphone 5 to customers, which it then disposes of in an ecological way.

If you need to repair the Fairphone 5, you will be pleased to know that the phone is divided into 10 modules that can be easily replaced. The mobile is held together by classic cross screws, so no special tools are needed to open it.

From other equipment, it is worth noting a solid 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM and a microSD slot of up to 2TB. eSIM is also supported, as well as classic nanoSIM or Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and of course NFC.

Fairphone 5 durability? Almost endless

The novelty will also arrive on the market with an inter-generationally larger battery capacity (4,200 mAh compared to 3,905 mAh) and support for 30W charging (compared to 20W for the previous generation). It should be charged to 50% within 20 minutes. In addition, users can order additional battery cells and simply change them when they run out, thus continuing to use the phone. The only pity is the absence of wireless charging, on the other hand, the novelty has stereo speakers and a modern USB-C 3.0. Due to the modular composition, the Fairphone does not have IP68 resistance, but it will offer IP55 and has also been tested for resistance to drops from a height of 1.8 meters.
