Already last year at the MWC 2022 trade fair, TCL showed a functional prototype of a smartphone with a matte Nxtpaper-type display, which dampens glare and is easier on the eyes. This technology has already reached TCL tablets, so the only question left is when the “paper display” will come to mobile phones. According to the Chinese manufacturer, the right time has come right now. Before the start of the IFA 2023 fair, it presents a pair of mobile phones TCL 40 Nxtpaper a TCL 40 Nxtpaper 5G.
Two phone models have also been added to the Nxtpaper family of display devices
The first named will also be sold on the Czech market, it will go on sale in October and the price for the TCL 40 Nxtpaper will be 6500 CZK. The second model does include 5G connectivity, but otherwise it is rather a slightly less well-equipped model, which has, for example, a larger clamshell display cutout for the selfie camera, a lower display resolution, less RAM or a visually less attractive, albeit practical modification of the plastic polymer on the back.

Gentle display without glare
Therefore, we will focus mainly on the “4G” model. The TCL 40 Nxtpaper is equipped with a 6.8-inch display with Full HD+ resolution, a refresh rate of 90 Hz and Nxpaper technology. This type of panel is characterized by better reading comfort, emits a low level of harmful blue light, is matte, does not attract as many fingerprints and does not reflect surrounding objects and light. At the same time, the screen maintains the original color balance. On the other hand, it may seem less contrasting to some. This type of panel resembling colored paper is especially suitable for reading outdoors. In Nxtpaper’s own settings, the display can also be changed to a monochrome design reminiscent of an e-ink reader.

In terms of equipment, it is rather a lower middle class represented by the Helio G88 chipset from Mediatek (MT6769). But there is enough memory, the phone offers 8 + 256 GB. It is also equipped with stereo speakers and a triple rear camera with a primary 50 Mpx sensor, but the f1.8 lens is without optical stabilization. The remaining two cameras (5 and 2 Mpx) are used for wide-angle shots and macro. The front camera in the display opening has a fixed focus and a resolution of 32 Mpx.

It is sold as a Dual SIM with a hybrid slot, one of which can also be used for a memory card. The fingerprint reader is located in the side unlock button. The phone runs Android 13. The battery has a capacity of 5010 mAh and is charged via USB-C with a maximum power of 33 W. There is also a 3.5 mm jack among the connectors.
