Introducing Sound and Vision CES 2024 Editor’s Picks: The Latest Trends in AV Technology
Every year, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas brings together the biggest names in the audiovisual (AV) technology industry to showcase their latest products, technologies, and services. CES 2024 was no exception, with an array of innovative and cutting-edge offerings on display. As an attendee of CES for over a decade, I had the opportunity to explore the show floor and witness firsthand the ongoing shifts in the AV and home entertainment sectors.
One notable change at CES 2024 was the absence of the two-channel audio segment, which was once a staple of the event. However, this did not mean a lack of exciting developments in the audio space. SVS and Focal stood out with their new Ultra Evolution series flagship speakers and revamped Aria Evo X series, respectively. These speakers combine advanced technologies and superior craftsmanship to deliver exceptional sound quality for audiophiles.
Television displays were also a prominent feature at CES 2024. Hisense and TCL showcased their impressive offerings, including Hisense’s 110UX, a massive 110-inch Mini-LED TV with advanced backlight technology for exceptional contrast and vibrant colors. Meanwhile, LG introduced its OLED Signature T Transparent Wireless OLED TV, which features a transparent screen that can convert into a normal OLED TV on command, offering a unique futuristic aesthetic.
Samsung made waves with its microLED display, which has overcome the issue of visible tiles or a grid, providing a seamless viewing experience. The company also impressed with its glasses-free 3D lightfield gaming monitor and glare-free matte OLEDs, which were displayed privately but garnered attention for their exceptional performance.
Projectors maintained a presence at CES 2024, although they were overshadowed by the enormous TVs on display. XGIMI’s Horizon Max projector caught my attention with its high-performance capabilities and innovative motorized gimbal stand. This projector is not only capable of producing saturated, color-accurate images but also adapts to the room by mapping objects and adjusting its projection accordingly.
In addition to the audio and visual technologies, CES 2024 showcased advancements in other areas. Auro Technologies presented its Auro CX Scalable Audio Codec, a streaming audio solution that offers an immersive sound experience even at low bitrates. Klipsch introduced its Flexus Core 200 soundbar, a sleek and high-performance audio solution that offers clear highs, detailed mids, and deep bass. The soundbar system can be paired with Klipsch’s wireless Flexus Sub 100 subwoofers for enhanced performance.
Victrola expanded its selection of wirelessly connected Hi-Fi turntables with the Stream Sapphire, a premium offering aimed at the custom install channel. This turntable features an upgraded cartridge and the ability to connect with Sonos, UPnP, and Roon. Meanwhile, xMEMS showcased its Cypress headphone technology, which utilizes solid-state transducers to create high-fidelity earbuds with effective noise-canceling capabilities.
CES 2024 was a testament to the continuous innovation and evolution of AV technology. While some products showcased at the event were still in development or prototypes, they provided a glimpse into the future of home entertainment and audiovisual experiences.
