Wolfsburg. Prof. Dr. Starting next week, Marco R. Schroeter will head the Medical Clinic I at the Wolfsburg Clinic. As chief physician, he takes on responsibility for cardiology, angiology, pulmonology, nephrology and internal intensive care medicine at the hospital. The hospital reports this.
Professor Schroeter is an internist and specialist in cardiology and until recently worked in the Heart Center at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG). The 50-year-old’s particular areas of focus include interventional cardiology, which includes all minimally invasive examinations and coronary procedures in the cardiac catheter laboratory. For several years he was also an active member of the heart valve team at UMG and was actively involved in all interventional procedures for structural heart diseases that were carried out in the heart center. Furthermore, the new chief physician at the Wolfsburg Clinic is an expert in the care of patients with a heart attack or heart failure. In-depth training and further education in general and cardiological intensive care medicine round off his clinical training.
Previous life path
After studying human medicine in Göttingen and Paris and after completing his doctoral thesis, he also worked in Göttingen and mostly abroad during his practical year. Back at the UMG, from 2003 onwards he worked as an assistant doctor, then as a specialist and subsequently in a senior position as a senior physician or deputy chief physician in the cooperating Lippoldsberg acute and rehabilitation hospital.
After research stays in Belgium and the USA as well as further intensive research activities at the UMG, he completed his habilitation in the field of internal medicine in Göttingen and received an adjunct professorship in 2018.
Until he moved to Wolfsburg, Professor Schroeter worked both clinically and scientifically at the UMG Heart Center as managing senior physician and head of cardiac intervention.
A specialist for the clinic
“With Prof. Schroeter, we have been able to gain a highly qualified and experienced specialist to head cardiology in our clinic. With his professional qualifications, his broad specialist knowledge and his wealth of experience, he has the best prerequisites to further develop the clinic,” he says happily Mayor Dennis Weilmann said.
The aim of the new chief physician is, in addition to complex and novel coronary interventions, to establish the interventional treatment of heart valve patients in close cooperation with the UMG and to carry out some of the heart valve treatments in the Wolfsburg Clinic in the medium term: “At the same time, for me and the entire team, the challenges of the “To accept the increasing outpatient use of cardiological procedures, to plan the necessary investments and to optimize the processes accordingly,” he continued.

Promote young talent
Prof. Dr. sees it as an important aspect of his work. In addition to teaching medical students, Schroeter also provides advanced training for cardiology residents and students in the clinical semesters and the practical year. “By successfully filling the position of chief physician, the city and the clinic are not only investing in excellent medical care for cardiology patients, but also in the important training of medical professionals,” emphasizes the chairwoman of the clinic committee, Dr. Ursula Partzsch-Asamoah.

About cardiology
Cardiology at the Wolfsburg Clinic treats around 6,000 patients every year, over 300 of them because of a serious heart attack. The focus of the department includes the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, the implantation of defibrillators and pacemakers as well as special procedures on the heart muscle tissue, so-called ablations.
Chief physician Prof. Dr. Schroeter succeeds Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Becker, who died in August after a serious illness. Due to his illness, Prof. Becker had already asked the city and the clinic at the beginning of the year to re-advertise his position.
