Introducing PlayStation Portal: Sony’s New Handheld Gaming Device

New handheld Sony’s device was previously known under the code name Project Q, but it is a thing of the past. A little while ago, it was officially announced that the “streaming handheld” is called PlayStation Portal, interestingly, we return to the abbreviation PSP as in PlayStation Portable. The device will further support remote play, which was already possible via Remote Play on smartphones. However, PlayStation Portal is directly adapted to it, but as a result, it is not a handheld in the true sense of the word. Together with the announcement, we also learned some new information and the new headphones received a more detailed presentation.

The PlayStation Portal has been designed so that the device offers a “handheld” gaming experience on the PlayStation 5. Due to its design, which consists of an 8-inch LCD display and a DualSense controller, all the advantages of the controller, such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. The display will then offer a resolution of 1080p at 60 fps. As with the classic controller itself, the 3.5 mm jack is an integral part. PlayStation Portal doesn’t use Bluetooth, so it won’t be possible to connect wireless headphones or Pulse 3D without using the included adapter, instead it uses the new lossless PlayStation Link technology.

To play, however, you will need a PlayStation 5 console, to which the device will be connected via Wi-Fi, without which, unfortunately, you will not be able to play, as we already learned during the presentation during this year’s PlayStation Showcase. PlayStation Portal is described on the blog as the perfect home device for playing games in another room. It will be possible to play all installed games on the console with the exception of PS VR2 exclusive games using the headset, unfortunately streaming games within PlayStation Plus Premium are not supported either. PlayStation Portal will be launched at the end of this year and will cost $199.99, which is almost 4,500 crowns. We do not know the official Czech prices at the moment.

As already mentioned, there are also headphones, which are Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore for PS5 and PC. The Pulse Elite are over-the-ear wireless headphones that promise noise-canceling listening and background noise filtering. The headphones also include a retractable microphone. The Pulse Explore promises the same, but they will be considerably more compact, as they are in-ear headphones. These will be supplied with a charging case. Sony promises the true quality of listening offered by premium headphones for audio professionals to further enhance the audio experience of the game. The Pulse Elite will cost $149.99 (just over 3,300 crowns) and the Pulse Explore will cost $199.99 (just under 4,500 crowns). The company will inform about the launch of pre-orders later.

IGN magazine already had the opportunity to get acquainted with the PlayStation Portal. However, the response from players to this news has not been very positive and, like after the PlayStation Showcase 2023, they complain about the need to own a console, the need for a Wi-Fi connection and simply that it is just a “Remote Play streaming device”. In addition, authentic shots of the device were leaked earlier, which further fueled these discussions.
