For occasional passengers, bus and train travel in Baden-Württemberg is now easier than ever. The state of Baden-Württemberg has launched a new system called CiCoBW, which allows passengers to check in and out using their smartphones. This eliminates the need for fare zones, ticket machines, and worries about buying the wrong ticket. The best price is billed at the end of the day.
The CiCoBW system is accessible through the VVS BWeit app, with the Stuttgart public transport company SSB being the first licensee to offer it across all networks. Additional licensees may be added in the future, and the integration of CiCoBW into the bwegt app is also planned.
Transport Minister Winfried Hermann praised the new system, stating that it makes local public transport more attractive and encourages people to switch from cars to buses and trains. CiCoBW is particularly beneficial for occasional drivers and complements the existing Deutschland-Ticket, which is mainly used by frequent public transport users.
Mario Laube, CFO of SSB, expressed pride in his team’s achievement in making nationwide occasional transport available through the VVS BWeit app. This means that all customers can travel easily without having to know the fare throughout Baden-Württemberg.
CiCoBW significantly lowers the barriers to using public transport in the region. The VVS BWeit app allows passengers to buy their tickets with a single swipe, without the need to specify a destination. The app automatically detects the end of the journey and charges the passenger the best price on a daily basis. The system also recognizes changes in the journey.
CiCoBW is a joint project of the Baden-Württemberg transport association, the Baden-Württemberg-Tarif GmbH, and the state. The Ministry of Transport finances and operates the necessary background systems through the local transport company Baden-Württemberg. Ingrid Kühnel, spokeswoman for the CiCo working group, emphasized the importance of simplifying sales for occasional customers and expressed satisfaction with the launch of the first system in partnership with SSB.
The CiCoBW system has undergone extensive testing by the SSB and the associations, resulting in further improvements to make it suitable for a large group of passengers. Horst Stammler, Managing Director of the Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund Stuttgart (VVS), confirmed the success of the CiCo system in a research project and praised its functionality.
CiCoBW has been available in the SSB’s VVS BWeit app for Android and iOS since June. Interested parties will soon be able to access the BWeit app through a link in the bwegt Bus&Bahn app. After the relaunch of the bwegt app, CiCoBW will be fully integrated into it.
Users of the VVS BWeit app can create an SSB customer account within the app. Customers who have already registered via VVS mobil or SSB Move can simply log in.
This new system is expected to make public transport more convenient and accessible for passengers in Baden-Württemberg, further promoting sustainable and climate-friendly travel options.
