Introducing Carpool Lanes in France: A System to Avoid Traffic Jams and Reduce Pollution

A square panel, with a white diamond on a blue background. It signals a carpool lane, still uncommon in France. The first were created in Lyon, Grenoble and Strasbourg to allow people who do not drive alone in their car to avoid traffic jams on busy axles. In Rennes, an experiment with this panel is planned for the autumn.

It will be installed on the RN 137, between Chartres-de-Bretagne and Porte d’Alma in Rennes, instead of the lane reserved for buses, inaugurated last January. Buses will still be able to travel on this section of the road, as will the emergency services, the police and the orange vehicles of the DIR Ouest, but cars with at least two people on board can also borrow it.

This system encourages limiting the number of cars on the road, and therefore pollution. A kind of win-win, where those who pollute less have the right to avoid traffic jams.

Some may be tempted to use this corridor to save time when they are alone in their car. A radar equipped with artificial intelligence already exists on some carpooling lanes to detect the number of people in a car. If there is only one, the fine incurred is 135 euros.
