On New Year’s Day, Mohamed Alaouie, 44, was allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol when, after arguing with his partner and trying to escape from the police, he ran over ten people in Manhattan.
The New York police officers prevented him from continuing his march and subdued him using electric guns, according to videos obtained by Univision 41.
The events were reported at 1:38 in the morning on January 1.
The car mounted the sidewalk on West 34th Street at the corner of Eighth Avenue.
The alleged perpetrator drove his Mercedes-Benz in the opposite direction for several blocks until he ended up running over several pedestrians at the aforementioned intersection.
A 24-year-old taxi driver was a witness and victim of the accident and, on condition of anonymity, agreed to speak with Univision 41.
The young man said that he was working in the first minutes of 2024 when Alaouie hit him from behind.
“I thought it was something from a movie, but I was afraid that someone would be shot or killed, an accident,” he explained.
“At the time I didn’t think about the vehicle. I thought about my life.”
The young man ended up being treated at a local hospital due to the blow he received when the vehicle crashed.
He assured that in emergencies he was with the woman who was traveling with the alleged perpetrator who would have told the authorities that the subject was driving under the influence of alcohol.
“I heard her story when the police officer was interviewing her because he was asking her if (the driver) was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and supposedly he was under the influence of alcohol,” the taxi driver added.
It turned out that they found a large amount of cocaine in the Mercedes – Benz.
In total, two police officers, two 39-year-old women, one 29-year-old and another 31-year-old were injured.
The woman was leaving Times Square after celebrating the New Year and was left unconscious under a food cart.
Mohammed Alaouie faces charges of attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence.
