Into The Woods plays overtime in New York

The revival ofInto the Woods from New York City Center is back on Broadway. The show, which was given for a limited period in the spring, will play extensions at the Saint-James Theater from June 28 to August 21.

This production is the third revival ofInto The Woodsa musical written and composed by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine in 1987. The original production won the Tony Award for Best Book and Best Score.

This revival is part of the cycle of shows Encore! of the New York City Center whose objective since 1994 is to make the public (re)discover each year three cult musicals. This series of shows is at the origin of many revivals on Broadway, including the Chicago from 1996, which is the second longest-running musical on Broadway, behind the Phantom of the Opera and in front The Lion King.

Cast members include: Sara Bareilles as the Baker’s Wife, Brian d’Arcy James as the Baker and Phillipa Soo as Cinderella.

Into The Woods is a sort of mash-up of the most famous tales of the Grim brothers: Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Jacques and the Beanstalk. The show tells the story of a baker and his wife who want more than anything to have a child. One day, they discover that the Witch has cast a spell on their family, preventing them from achieving their dream. To break the spell, they must bring the Witch a series of objects belonging to different tales: Little Red Riding Hood’s cape, a lock of Rapunzel’s hair, Cinderella’s shoe… but in the heart of the woods, nothing never goes as planned!

Into The Woods is Stephen Sondheim’s second Broadway revival. Indeed, the British revival of Company with Katrina Lenk and Patti LuPone triumph across the Atlantic. The famous composer died last November at the age of 91.
