A security investigation inside Israel revealed that five female soldiers working as guards in a prison had an intimate relationship with a Palestinian prisoner inside his prison cell, who was serving a life sentence.
The Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that intelligence information was received by the Israeli security service, indicating that a female soldier in compulsory service working as a prison guard had an intimate relationship with a Palestinian prisoner during the past year.
She said that the Palestinian was sentenced to life imprisonment, allegedly for his involvement in an attack in central Israel in which Israelis were killed.
One female soldier’s lawyer claimed the relationship was forced on her and was not consensual – but a senior police officer, on the other hand, claimed there was evidence that “significantly weakens” her story.
The Israeli security service revealed that the Palestinian prisoner keeps a mobile phone in his cell, which he uses to correspond with female prison guards and even receive and exchange pictures with them.
Yedioth Ahronoth indicated that the prison guard who was investigated is nearing the end of her military service. The police are preparing to summon the other four female prison guards for questioning, who are suspected of communicating with the same prisoner.
This incident comes after leaks reported by Israeli media last year about female guards being sexually assaulted while serving in the prison service.
