Interview with Roman Staša: From MasterChef Winner to TV Moderator

The winner of MasterChef from 2020, thirty-five-year-old Roman Staša is no longer only devoted to cooking, he also hosts Weekend Breakfast on Nova TV. And it was there that he experienced his first moderator kick in a live broadcast. Fortunately, he took it in stride and still laughs about it today.

Do you still remember what your expectations were after winning MasterChef?
Three years ago, I thought that even a dog wouldn’t bark at me six months after the competition. (laughs) This is usually the case after these competitions. A lot depends on luck and also on how much one stays with one’s feet on the ground… I hope I stayed. I definitely did not expect to be where I am now, and paradoxically it seems to me that people are getting to know me more and more at the moment.

Now you can also be seen in Weekend Breakfast. What is your priority now: cooking or moderating?
I have Fridays and sometimes weekends on TV, but I always stay very close to gastronomy. I travel with my project Without an Address all over the country and cook at people’s homes four or five times a week. So my life is still very much about cooking and I certainly don’t avoid it. I enjoy it more and more.

Are you used to moderating or are you still nervous when you have to go in front of the camera?
I’m still a little nervous, I’ve been moderating for a very short time, it’s not even been a year yet, but I have to admit that I’m enjoying it a lot. Doing interviews is great. In addition, I have a great partner, Rebecca, who is amazing, and whenever something spills, she is able to save everything. And I can rely on her, which makes it very easy for me. I hope that this job will last for me and that I will improve. It’s an industry I enjoy, I wouldn’t want to leave it.

Pavlína Pořízková: Before I met Jeff, I went on about seventy dates

Every presenter has a “bump” that happened to them. Already done your first one?
Yes, I’m done with it. Rebecca and I missed boarding once. The camera was rolling and I was sprawled out on the sofa and Rebecca was nowhere to be found. (laughs) Fortunately, I got to chat with our guests, which was at least a bit of a win, but it totally caught me by surprise. No one said anything in my ear, and suddenly I saw the red light come on by the camera, so I was silent and my head was going, “What am I going to do?” (laughs) I was pulling it by myself for about two minutes, then Rebecca came running and it was that good

Among other things, you are also a dad. Has your gastronomy changed in connection with this?
The biggest change is that I can’t use chili… And I love chili! (laughs) Just yesterday I was making fish, with a salad, and I was just picking up the chili when I thought that Samuel would like the food too, so I didn’t use it. That has changed the most. Otherwise, my partner and I have always tried to eat healthily, no fried things, etc., so my son has been eating everything with us since he could eat everything. The seasoning is the only thing that bothers me a little, I like to really spice up my food.

Roman Staša in Weekend Breakfast:

How are you enjoying this summer?
I have work this summer, but I don’t mind. I had a job the previous two summers too, because I rode the “Tour de leto” with Mark Ztracený. This year, Marek decided to rest, so we are not going. But my family and I don’t go anywhere much in the summer anyway, because we feel like everyone is everywhere, on the contrary, there aren’t many people in the Czech Republic, so we enjoy the free roads and the few places we like to go to. It’s not completely crowded. And we are not going to go on vacation until September and then in winter.
