“They have quality, it will come back to them one day.” This is how Slovan coach Vladimír Weiss reacted to the young footballers of MŠK Žilina on Saturday. After being relegated from the Conference League, will the club sell its talents and why haven’t any of them strengthened the championship team yet? After Saturday’s league match between Slovan and Banská Bystrica (2:2), home coach Vladimír Weiss Jr. defended the footballers of Žilina for their performances in the Conference League against Gent. How did you perceive his words of praise for your team?
Vlado Weiss has achieved a lot in football. Every positive response from him to the team’s performance certainly helped the players’ cabin, the implementation team and the people who work for football in Žilina. We are glad that someone appreciates that we try to play football in order to develop the players as best as possible. But we are aware that the double match with the Belgian team turned out the way it did.
But the score from the double match 3:10 can’t even be praised, is it?
We can also critically evaluate what needs to be improved and what needs to be worked on. But I repeat, any encouraging words, especially from a coach with an international reputation, are positive. We are not flying in the clouds and we know what we need to improve. But we have our own path and we want to follow it.

We managed a double match with Levadia Tallinn, we played well against Ružomberok, which was not easy. And the matches with Gent were demanding from the point of view of energy expenditure, result, and the players could experience them emotionally. Especially after the first match, which showed us the cruel reality, there could have been disappointment in the team. But we already knew after the draw that Gent is on a different level.
However, there were also voices that highlighted the fact that you did not close in on defense and tried to play open football despite the strength of the opponent.
Someone will say that it is naive to play football like this against quality opponents. Another, that they have their own style, system and regardless of the quality of the opponent, they try to present themselves with their game. That’s how it’s always been. But in the first half in Podbrezová, the defensive performance was very good, especially from the point of view of game organization. Up front, except for two shooting attempts, we did not create anything.
