Interview with Linda Nosková: Tournament Preparation, Player Pressures, and Dealing with Criticism

It looks like you and Maria Bouzková will have the training court to yourself for a few days.

I only fly with the coach and the team manager. It will be different than when we played the qualification in Turkey (against Ukraine). Above all, let the girls do well in Cancun, the conditions there are difficult. It will be quite difficult to fly in and then play somewhere else on a different surface.

What do you think about this year’s Tournament of Champions, where Markéta Vondroušová and Barbora Krejčíková, Kateřina Siniaková are playing in doubles?

It’s so embarrassing, the WTA doesn’t have it very easy. Such an event would deserve better organization.

The WTA is now under heavy fire from critics, do you have a knack for it too?

Not personally, but the calendar is already quite full. And they push female players to play three tournaments a month, maybe even four. This is hard for us physically and mentally.

During the season, you moved up to the fortieth place in the world rankings, there is no younger player ahead of you. There will probably be more pressure on you in Seville, don’t you think?

There’s a pretty good chance I’ll play. I’ve been training for it and I’m looking forward to it. It is clear that I am happy to be among our girls.

But you haven’t played a game in a month since returning from China. Won’t it be a handicap?

It would be hard enough going into a singles match even in a normal tournament after such a break. But I worked a lot on my fitness to get up to speed. As it will be a team week, we will all prepare well together.

What experience do you have with the Swiss women you start with on Tuesday?

I trained with Belinda (Bencic) in Switzerland a few months ago. I also know Teichmann.

Markéta Vondroušová and Karolína Muchová already talked about the fact that they would like to win in Seville at the US Open. However, health and the inflated program cut into the Czech plans quite a bit. How do you see it with ambition?

Unfortunately, all teams will want to win there, it’s the last event of the season. When I join, I would like to contribute to our success.

Before leaving for Seville, you also tried out the role of the face of an advertising campaign. How did you feel in it?

It’s the first big sponsorship thing. We did this campaign a few months ago, so also photos and interviews. It’s nice to step off the court and be someone else once in a while. Of course, I wouldn’t have gotten to this without tennis.

When you were on the Asian tour, you posted on Instagram a screenshot of an appalling message addressed to you, apparently by a disgusted punter. What made you do it?

That’s more of a laugh.

I receive such comments and insults every day. If I win, I lose… Even if I don’t play. It happens every day, but I don’t think anything of it at all, I laugh at it. But when I published it, a lot of people thought I was crazy about it. Exactly opposite. At the same time, many acquaintances wrote to me to see if I was okay.

How does the family react?

As coaches and tennis players, we already know it. They don’t deal with it much, it’s hard, but they know that I don’t deal with it that way.

Have you considered cutting yourself off from social media?

Of course, I thought about it many times, but sometimes I take a week without any contact. Being on social networks all the time is not good, they are often toxic.

What about articles about yourself? Do you read them?

Before, yes, because there wasn’t much yet. Ours sometimes still send me a link.

But now you are mostly praised, isn’t it?

That’s right, now it’s good…
