Interview with Former Hockey Player: Life After Retirement, Sports, and Nostalgia

On Saturday, he took to the ice in Prague’s Holešovice on the wing of the first formation. He repeated the cooperation with Jaromir Jágr, which worked well already during his engagement with the New York Rangers. Petr Čajánek joined them in the center. Otherwise, the 41-year-old Průcha practically does not play hockey. “I don’t have much contact with him anymore. I enjoy hobby sports more,” revealed the native of Chrudim.

What are you doing now?

I kitesurf, wingfoil and surf. Anything on the water, but also on a snowboard. Overall, board sports where I don’t have to involve my head.

Did you manage to train at least before the exhibition?

I was on the ice once. I played in Pardubice a month ago, but otherwise I was on skates after two years.

A concussion ended your career. Is everything okay now?

To the extent possible. I learned to live with PTSD and listen to my body. I know when I can pull and when I have to let go. But I can’t live without sports. Leaving it out makes me feel worse than if I just let my head rest.

What do you miss most about hockey?

The cabin was what I was looking forward to the most. The feeling of presence in the cabin is irreplaceable. Getting used to life without a cabin is much harder than getting used to leaving the sport as such.

So when you went back to it over the weekend, was it nostalgia for you?

I associate nostalgia with the past of more than ten years. I hate hearing that word. I don’t feel old enough to talk about nostalgia. But it was a nice reminder of what used to be.

After the end of their active career, many hockey players start to devote themselves to training. Didn’t you have those thoughts too?

I thought about it, but I didn’t want to be reminded of what I loved so much and had to leave soon. I didn’t watch hockey at all for a few years, it completely pushed it out. Now I’m happy to look at him in peace. I am convinced that the decision to end my career was the right one. It was no longer possible.

So have you come to terms with the ending?

I will never be completely reconciled to it. But I had no choice. I tried to start training, but my head didn’t give me a chance to complete it at least fifty percent of the performance.

The exhibition was on the occasion of the celebration of 120 years of hockey Sparta. What are your memories of her?

One of the most intense matches ever sold out. We prepared for the match as for the final.

For a long time, you alternated your stay in Prague with Miami. Now you go to Marbella, why the change?

Because of covid. At that time, they announced that there would be no flights to Miami for two years. I sold everything there and was looking for something closer, where I could go by car if it was not possible to fly again. And also to be relatively warm there. I chose Marbella. It is more pleasant there than here and it is ideal for my sports.

How is your day?

It is mainly filled with sports. I get up in the morning, go to the gym or go for a run. I basically have the afternoon free, but there is always something fun to do. I do not complain.

Will you at least come to watch the World Cup in the Czech Republic?

I will definitely go to one or two matches. Czech fans can create an incredible atmosphere. Inimitable in Europe and perhaps in the world.
