« This book comes from my guthe was my remedy for drugs.” At the water’s edge, in Putanges-le-Lac, a small town in Normandy, Jean-Baptiste Corrèges, 29 years oldweighs each of his words, holding a small book in his hands.
In June 2024he published his first collection of poetry, A few minutes before dawnpublished by Vérone. A work in the form of introspection, which he wrote during his stay in a psychiatric hospital in Lyon, after a long period of drug addiction.
“Remission of mental problems is possible”
An author unknown to the general public, you have just published a very personal work, returning to your time in a psychiatric hospital. Is this a kind of analysis of your experience?
Jean-Baptiste Corrèges. You can definitely see it that way. This book tells everything I experienced for two years. It allowed me to externalize and try to immortalize my experience in a psychiatric hospital. It is a kind of laboratory of my stay. Moreover, the cover of my book is none other than my hospital room. This book was my remedy, it was much more useful to me than the hospital itself.
“I was consuming a whole bunch of things.”
This collection evokes your personal trajectory, your addictions. How did they inspire you?
JB.C. I grew up in Haute-Savoie, being adopted at the age of three. I fell into serious drug addictions when I was in Lyon. I used cocaine, cannabis, a whole bunch of things… That’s what led me to psychiatry, it’s part of my journey, and therefore my inspiration.
What message are you trying to convey through this collection?
JB.C. I am trying to show that remission is possible for mental problems, as well as addictions. However, this book is very personal. I wrote it primarily for myself. I am not sure that another book will be published.
