The circulation of the trains of the R1 and RG1 lines of Rodalies between Barcelona and Mataró has been restored at 9:20 a.m., after three hours of service interruption due to an electrical failure. During this time, Renfe has recommended that passengers on the affected lines use alternative transport. However, the incident has caused chaos early in the morning because many users do not have alternative public transport routes and the rain has complicated traffic, especially in access to Barcelona.
The breakdown was detected around 5:30 am this Thursday and at 6:15 am the Adif technicians have urged traffic to be cut off in order to solve the problem. The company’s forecast to solve the problem was two hours, but finally the service was not restarted until three hours later.
The interruption of circulation on these two Rodalies lines coincides with a rainy day, which has complicated circulation on the road network as many passengers have chosen to use the car to go to work. The cut of the two lines has caused agglomerations of passengers at the Sants station in Barcelona and the R4 line has also been indirectly affected, while waiting times at the stations have been longer than usual.
The Maresme line is used to suffering incidents, especially in adverse weather conditions. Last March, the strong waves that hit the Maresme coast caused the detachment of part of the slope that separates the railway line from the coast. The incident forced the interruption of rail traffic between Malgrat and Pineda de Mar from 7:30 a.m. and affects the trains of the RG1 and the R1 of Cercanías, heir to the first railway in Spain and threatened by the rise of the sea, as they warn geologists and reports from the Generalitat.
