JAKARTA, investor.id – As an effort to restore services in Jayapura as a result of the disconnection of the Sumatra Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS), PT Telkom Indonesia Tbk (Telkom) has dispatched the DNEX Pacific Link (DPL) Cableship which will connect the SMPCS submarine cable for the Biak-Jayapura section. This SMPCS submarine cable broke at a depth of 4,050 meters on the Biak-Jayapura section which resulted in disruption of services in Jayapura and its surroundings.
This development was conveyed by Telkom in a written statement received by the editors, Saturday (5/6/2021).
Telkom said that the DPL ship is a ship specifically designed for the need for laying and repairing submarine cables. The ship which weighs up to 7,000 tons is equipped with the best technology such as Dynamic Positioning 2 (DP2) for automation systems with full redundance, Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV), and plough. The ship has the capability of operating to a depth of 10-6,000 meters and can sail nonstop up to 60 days.
The DPL ship has been at the breaking point location since May 30, 2021 at 23:21 WITA and has conducted an analysis of current conditions, sea contours, and shipping patterns. Currently the ship is pulling the cable to Biak/Sorong, which will then continue to Jayapura.
SMPCS submarine cables using technology repeater because the distance is far enough so that it requires high voltage. During the process of connecting the cable later, it is necessary to turn it off repeater but it has no impact on the service because the system backup already prepared.
To ensure service quality, especially for customers in Biak and Manokwari, Telkom has prepared backup link which can meet service needs under normal conditions, where the average traffic for the Biak-Manokwari-Sorong link reaches 40 Gbps with peak times occurring from 20:00 to 22:00, while at other times the total traffic is below 40Gbps . For this reason, Telkom has provided backup using the Palapa Ring Timur Biak-Manokwari-Sorong and Nabire-Timika segments of 2×10 Gbps each, so that the total reaches 40 Gbps.
Telkom’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Pujo Pramono, said that Telkom continues to strive to accelerate the connection of the SMPCS cable so that people can return to enjoying TelkomGroup services comfortably as before.
“In the process of connecting the cable, there will be a blackout” repeater on the SMPCS link for the Sorong-Manokwari-Biak section. This blackout has no effect on TelkomGroup services, especially in the Biak and Manokwari locations because they are already available backup adequate. Telkom will try to implement blackouts to avoid peak times so that the convenience of using Telkom services is maintained. We apologize if there are services that are not optimal during the repair process, in order to try to get the cable back connected and customers get it experience TelkomGroup services to the fullest,” said Pujo.
The cable repair process is directly supervised by Telkom Infra, one of Telkom’s subsidiaries and it is targeted that the reconnection of the submarine cable can be completed in early June 2021.
