Mexico City. The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor project, presented by the Federal Government as one of the Development Poles for Well-being (Podebi), shows “spaces of opportunity for private investment that generate development poles and infrastructure for the movement of goods,” according to representatives of the Mexican Association of Freight Agents (AMACARGA) and the National Association of Importers and Exporters of the Mexican Republic (ANIERM) after a tour of the route from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos.
Representatives of the association pointed out that during their four-day tour of the corridor, they were able to observe how in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, work will be done on infrastructure and operations or dry port services, to project containerized cargo operations; while the port of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, has infrastructure for chemicals and energy and little movement of containers and railroad cars, but they have experience and their infrastructure and commercial projects will advance faster than at the other end.
In its report, AMACARGA emphasized the corrections that the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) must make related to the laying of the cables that run over the route, in order to avoid the risk of accidents due to the height levels when the double-stack intermodal service begins. They also noted the opportunities offered by the Ixtepec Oaxaca airport, located in a military zone and 40 minutes from Salina Cruz, which already operates as a civil airport and also has the conditions to receive international flights, in addition to projecting the start, in 2025, of the construction of domestic cargo storage areas.
The Interoceanic Corridor seeks to be a platform for the transfer of goods from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean and vice versa through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. It is a decentralized public body, attached to the Navy.
