ZWOLLE – Internists are concerned about the growth in the number of corona patients in hospitals.
They warn that the quality of care for chronically ill patients is increasingly compromised. And if people do not adhere to the corona measures.
Eighty percent
According to the Dutch Association of Internists, internists are currently treating about 80 percent of covid19 hospital patients. They are already canceling consultation hours in a number of hospitals, so that chronically ill patients with, for example, cancer, kidney disease or diabetes cannot go to their internist.
“We do everything we can to help them, but if the covid19 infections do not quickly recede, we will soon no longer be able to guarantee the quality of care for both the covid19 patients and our regular patients,” said Robin Peeters, internist and chairman of the Dutch Internists Association.
The association reiterates the importance of complying with the measures. Peeters: “We have learned a lot since the outbreak of the first wave, the treatment has improved, but together we are responsible for ensuring that the enormous influx of patients does not increase further. This is only possible by jointly continuing to comply with government measures and realizing that further tightening of these measures is necessary. A situation like the one in March, or worse, otherwise seems inevitable. ”
Hydroxychloroquine
The anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine leads to significantly better results in COVID-19 patients in the nursing ward than previously thought. The chance of transfer to the ICU is 53 percent lower than in patients who received no treatment. This is shown by national retrospective research among 1064 patients. Dr. Jolanda Lammers and Dr. Paul Groeneveld, researchers and internist infectiologists in Isala, Zwolle, speak of a surprising result.
