Triumphant tones at the IOC on the occasion of the executive committee: “a huge success” for the Paris 2024 Games said the German Thomas Bachwho next year will no longer be president (in her place, probably, the former Zimbabwean swimming champion, Kirsty Coventry). “The 2024 Olympic Games were the most watched Olympic Games ever,” Bach said. “84% of the potential audience, or approximately five billion people worldwide, watched these Games. Paris 2024 was the Olympics with the highest ratings ever given by stakeholders and the public.” According to Bach, 28.7 billion hours of footage have been viewed worldwide on the platforms of media rights holders alone, with each viewer watching an average of nine hours of coverage, a 20% increase compared to the previous Games, Tokyo 2021.

Bach cited the IOC organizing committee’s report: Athletes greatly enjoyed the Paris 2024 Games, with 95% rating their overall experience as good or satisfactory. Bach also highlighted the Games’ success with the rest of the world, amid turmoil and political instability. “Paris has also arrived at the right time for our world’s expectations, as independent consumer research shows. 78% of people believe the Olympic Games are more important than ever in our divided world,” he said. “75% of people believe that the IOC succeeds in uniting the world in peaceful competition.” And he also explained: “In the future, more and more Olympic Games will be more urban, more youthful, more sustainable, more inclusive. Games with full gender equality with the same number of quotas for female and male athletes.”

Gregoire Mastrangelo, Head of Insights and Analytics, then shared further statistics-based insights. Mastrangelo highlighted the 25% increase in views compared to Tokyo 2021, highlighting the enormous increase on social media, which recorded 412 billion interactions from 270 million posts, a 290% increase compared to previous Games. “The benefits of digital are so clearly visible for the Olympic movement,” said Mastrangelo. “During Paris, athletes, Federations, National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the Games Organizing Committee (OCOG), gained another 85 million followers on social media on the main international platforms”. Mastrangelo then showed slides showing huge spikes in Internet searches for athletics, gymnastics, swimming and skateboarding. Now it’s up to Los Angeles (2028) with the probable participation of Trump in the inaugural ceremony, then Brisbane 2032 while for the 2036 Games India, South Africa, Qatar, Indonesia, Istanbul, Santiago de Chile and Bucharest have already taken place. There will be time to decide, it will be up to the new president of the IOC
