Internazionale seized the Italian Cup for the second year in a row on Wednesday. The Champions League finalist recovered from a bad start in the final against Conference League finalist Fiorentina thanks to Lautaro Martínez: 1-2.
Inter got off to a dramatic start at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. After three minutes, goalkeeper Samir Handanovic already had to fish after an attack from Fiorentina over several discs. Nicolás González was the end station of the beautiful combination.
Thanks to Martínez, Inter could still rest with a good feeling. The attacker first promoted a through ball by Marcelo Brozovic to goal. Shortly afterwards, the Argentinian put the 1-2 on the scoreboard by hitting a cross from Nicolò Barella against the ropes with an utmost effort.
Inter held on in the second half and were able to celebrate after the game. Denzel Dumfries played the entire match with the Milan superpower. Stefan de Vrij came on in the second half.
A striking moment in Rome was Edin Dzeko’s substitution in the 58th minute. The Bosnian striker had to leave the field for Romelu Lukaku and was visibly angry about Simone Inzaghi’s decision. Player and coach had an altercation on the sidelines.
Inter can win a prize in more than two weeks. The Italians will play the final of the Champions League against Manchester City on June 10. Inter are third in Serie A, with two rounds to go. Fiorentina, number eleven in the Italian league, can win the Conference League on June 7 at the expense of West Ham United.
