N2 – The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) was founded in 1972 in Laxenburg near Vienna and was the world’s first research institute where – according to its own claim – scientists from East and West work together to solve global or transnational problems should. After a description of the founding of IIASA, this article turns to the analysis methods that were used at IIASA and, based on the history of these analysis methods, traces the interactions between organizational form and form of knowledge that shaped everyday research at IIASA in the first two decades of its existence . Due to its specific focus and form of organization, the IIASA provided a conducive environment for the development of an innovative approach to the epistemological, methodological and knowledge policy problems that faced a globally oriented study of the planet and its inhabitants in the second half of the 20th century faced.
