The Constructor University in Bremen and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will also offer schoolchildren from the Bremen region the opportunity in 2023 to discover their passion for STEM subjects in an international setting. MIT students Mollie Edmondson and Julian Yocum are gaining their first international experience in Bremen.

Whether it’s a summer course in programming or tutorials for fellow students at MIT – Mollie Edmondson and Julian Yocum have taught in a wide variety of areas. Although Mollie is studying aerospace engineering, she is also very interested in chemistry and physics. What she likes about teaching is that it is not only possible to convey content and theories, but also to awaken new interests, stimulate changes in perspective and deepen relationships.

Julian, physics student, specializing in artificial intelligence, mathematics and computer science. He also likes the variety of teaching and the opportunity to delve even deeper into the subject by explaining and communicating various topics. Thanks to the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives Office (MISTI), both are now able to gain teaching experience abroad for the first time. It is also the first trip to Europe for the students – they are accommodated with lecturers from the Constructor University: Professor Hilke Brockmann and Professor Song Yan.

At the end of January, Mollie and Julian, together with Constructor University students Tina Andonovska and Dmytro Kolisnyk, teach students interested in science in workshops on topics from chemistry and physics. The students are currently working on the theoretical and practical content in a two-week preparatory phase under the guidance of Professor Ulrich Kortz and Professor Jürgen Fritz. They implement their teaching concept in the seminar rooms and laboratories on the campus in Bremen-Nord.

“We are very pleased about the support of the Heraeus Foundation in the amount of €8,500. This enables us to offer the workshops free of charge again this year,” says Freia Hardt, Head of the Student Affairs department at Constructor University.

The workshops are aimed at high school students from the Bremen region and are held in English. The students deepen their knowledge of chemistry and physics and get to know innovative teaching methods. In addition to the specialist knowledge they are given, they also get an insight into the research facilities of a university, life on campus and international cooperation.
