International Women in Film & Television Show in Mexico Celebrates Its 19th Edition

Mexico City, Oct 31 (EFE).- The International Women in Film and Television Show in Mexico begins its 19th edition on Wednesday, which will last until Sunday, November 5, a period in which 16 feature films and 22 shorts will be screened. , and they will recognize the career of filmmaker Busi Cortés, who told EFE this Tuesday that she was very excited.

The director of the emblematic film “El secreto de Romelia” (1988) will receive the “La Musa” award on Saturday, October 4 at 8:00 p.m. (3:00 GMT on Sunday) at the Cineteca Nacional.

“For me it is a wonderful surprise. I come to pay homage in Pamplona (Spain) and I arrive and they tell me that they are going to honor me, that ‘Romelia’s Secret’ is going to be shown and they tell me ‘we are going to give you a muse.’ I have given several muses and now that it is my turn I am very happy,” Cortés told EFE.

During the exhibition, which will show the films at the Cineteca Nacional, the Interactive Museum of Economy (Mide), the Cine Club el Gato Azul, Cinemanía, La Calaca cultural space and Faro Cosmos, the guest country will be Chile and there will be two Chilean films that inaugurate the exhibition with the presence of Beatriz Sánchez, ambassador of Chile in Mexico.

There will be 22 Mexican films and 16 foreign ones, from countries such as Chile, Denmark, Argentina, Canada, Brazil, Macedonia, United Kingdom, Germany, United Arab Emirates and Spain.

This year the exhibition has the slogan “Women Building” and, as detailed by the organizers at the press conference, the objective of this edition is to show the construction of stories and narratives that women prioritize in the development of their film projects.

In the 19 years of the exhibition, they agreed that the advances for women in cinema in Mexico have been many, but the road ahead is still long.

The president of the Association of Women in Cinema and Television (organizer of the exhibition), Mitzuko Villanueva, considered that the position for women “now is greater than two years ago or five years ago.”

“For those of us who make films, our position right now is greater. There has been evolution in terms of the increase in female directors above all and I think there is an even more important advance in the technical part of filmmaking, spaces have been achieved that did not allow us. It is incredible to see a set full of women in its entirety, five years ago it was impossible to see, and that is a great evolution,” said Villanueva.

However, there is a lack of equity in terms of participation and also in salaries, he considered.

For her part, Cortés said that she has seen over the years that the work of all women in cinema has managed to maintain them in many ways.

“We have done the work of an ant, carrying to reach the anthill, which is now enormous,” concluded Cortés.
