International Swimming Federation Adds ‘Open Category’ to World Championships

The International Swimming Federation said on Wednesday that the next World Championships will witness the establishment of an “open category” during the competitions to be held in Berlin next October.

The federation voted last year to restrict the participation of transgender athletes in the elite women’s competition, launching an open category announced last month.

Hussein Al-Musallam, President of the International Federation, said: “When the federation set its policy regarding eligibility to participate in men’s and women’s competitions, we committed to exploring the possibility of launching the open category.”

The open category competitions will witness 50-meter and 100-meter races in all types of races during the championship, which will be held from the sixth to the eighth of next October.

The International Federation added that the open category may be added to other tournaments in the future.
