International reaction to Russia’s attack on Ukraine: key statements

After the Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24, the first reaction of the international community followed. US President Joe Biden stated that Russia has chosen a military option for the development of events in relation to Ukraine and it will be responsible for the consequences of these actions.

“Only Russia is responsible for (…) what these actions will bring, and the United States, its allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable,” Biden said in a White House statement.

He said he will meet Thursday with G7 leaders and then speak to the American people to announce further consequences for Russia from the United States and its allies and partners. Biden said Washington will coordinate with NATO allies “to ensure a strong, unified response to any aggression against the Alliance.”

London also condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. “Strongly condemn unprovoked attack,” Russia in Ukraine tweeted British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. According to her, the United Kingdom will work with partners to respond to Russia’s actions against Ukraine: “We are with Ukraine and will work with international partners to respond to this terrible act of aggression.”

In turn, he condemned the actions of the Russian Federation and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. “I strongly condemn Russia’s unprovoked and perfidious attack on Ukraine. The attack endangers the lives of numerous people,” he said in a statement.

“This is a serious violation of international law, a threat to Euro-Atlantic security. I call on Russia to immediately cease hostilities and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said. He stressed that NATO allies would meet to discuss the situation.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated that the European Council should approve the most stringent sanctions against the Russian Federation. “We must immediately respond to Russia’s criminal aggression against Ukraine. Europe and the free world must stop Putin. Today’s European Council must approve the most severe sanctions. Our support for Ukraine must be real,” Morawiecki tweeted on Thursday.
