International pressure on Cuba mounts after ‘historic protests’

On the day the regime in Cuba celebrates the national ‘Day of the Revolution’, an international coalition of 21 countries has condemned the government for the mass arrests that took place after the protests earlier this month.

On July 11, tens of thousands of people took to the streets across the country out of dissatisfaction with the economic decline and the faltering approach to the corona crisis. Dozens if not hundreds of people were arrested after the protests.

In addition to the United States, countries such as Austria, Brazil and Israel are now calling for the release of these detainees and for the Cubans to exercise their right to freedom of expression. The international coalition also demands that the internet be fully restored.

New sanctions

With the statement, the countries are sending a signal that they are monitoring the situation in Cuba and will hold the regime accountable. Earlier, US President Biden announced new sanctions against members of the Cuban government.

These particularly affect the Cuban Defense Minister and members of the elite military unit Boinas Negras (the Black Berets), who are held responsible by the US for violently crushing the protest.
