International player transfers hit record high: FIFA

The 2024 transfer window saw a record 11,000 international transfers worldwide, up 4.8 percent compared to the same period last year, according to a report by FIFA, the governing body of world football.

Clubs spent more than $6.4 billion on transfers, the second-highest figure in history, although 13.06 percent less than last year. Around $5.58 billion was spent in Europe alone, with English clubs dominating the spending, with more than $1.6 billion on transfers up to mid-year.

Spending by English clubs is down 15.5 per cent from last year’s €2 billion, a more cautious approach following concerns over possible penalties for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Spending by Saudi Arabia’s top clubs has also fallen by 50.74 percent, from $875 million last year to $431 million this season. Registration for transfers in the Saudi league closes in October.

England also lead the list of signings, with 526, followed by clubs from Brazil and Portugal.

International transfer spending in women’s professional soccer was $6.8 million during the mid-year period, more than double the figure for last year.
