Israel intensifies its attacks, people in Britain, France and Switzerland shout for ceasefire
(AFP, London, 28th) The Israeli military has gradually increased its attacks on the Gaza Strip. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched in the UK today to call for a ceasefire, and people in France and Switzerland also took to the streets to protest.
As Israel launches heavy airstrikes to provide cover for ground troops to intensify their assault on Gaza, the United Nations warns that thousands more civilians will be killed.
Israeli officials said that the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas crossed the Gaza border on October 7, killed 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians, and took more than 220 hostages.
Israel immediately launched retaliatory attacks on the Gaza corridor controlled by Hamas. Gaza’s health department stated that Israeli attacks have killed 7,703 people, mostly civilians, and more than 3,500 children were among the victims.
In London, England, people held large rallies in support of the Palestinians for the third consecutive weekend.
Dani Nadiri, a 36-year-old demonstrator, said it was not enough for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to simply call for a “humanitarian truce” to allow aid to enter Gaza and hostages to leave.
“A complete ceasefire is necessary and now is the time to take action rather than allow the situation to escalate further,” Nadiri told AFP.
In Paris, France, people took to the streets today to shout despite a court injunction issued on the grounds of public order. A large police presence blocked demonstrators in the center of the capital.
Elsa Toure, the deputy chief of Corbeil-Essonnes, south of Paris, said an immediate ceasefire was necessary “to stop the killing of men, women, and children.”
Some demonstrators held up signs and said, “Where has our humanity gone?”
In Switzerland, 7,000 people reportedly took to the streets in Zurich, 2,000 in Lausanne, and 1,800 in Geneva.
