International Kiss Day: Learn about the main health benefits of kissing

Demonstrations of affection such as kisseshugs and caresses returned, these have been manifesting in many ways after a long time of having opted for social distancing due to the pandemic.

Los kisseson an emotional and physical level, are the first experience of love, comfort and security that is given through breastfeeding, which is the first way for the human being to connect with life and the world.

“During a kiss, three to four senses are involved, such as taste, smell, touch and sight. A kiss usually activates between 30 to 34 facial muscles which causes a decrease in the formation of wrinkles on the skin and stimulates its regeneration, likewise, it releases dopamine, generating pleasure and emotional well-being”, says Dr. Roberto Carrasco, professor of Medicine at the Continental University.

For this reason, within the framework of international kiss day (April 13), the specialist shares five positive effects of kissing for health, both emotionally and physically:

1. Strengthens the immune system: Kisses in physical health help prevent diseases since the saliva exchanges that occur during the act stimulate the immune system and strengthen it to create antibodies.

2. Burn calories: Kissing can burn up to approximately 16 calories per kiss, depending a lot on the intensity with which it is carried out.

3. Promotes oral hygiene health: Kissing stimulates saliva production. A greater amount of saliva helps fight bacterial plaque, which is the main cause of cavities, among other problems for dental health and the oral cavity.

4. Contributes to skin health: Kissing influences the increase in blood flow in the face, inducing a sudden production of collagen and elastin, proteins responsible for skin nutrition since they are responsible for its firmness and elasticity.

5. Lowers blood pressure: Frequently, passionate kissing allows the heartbeat to accelerate in a healthy way, lowering blood pressure. It also dilates blood vessels and makes it easier for more blood to reach all your vital organs.

“Human beings are social beings, and kissing has the power to keep us together. For this reason, displays of affection are important in human relationships because they strengthen affective ties and reduce anxiety, as well as stress,” adds Karen Pérez, a professor of Psychology at the Continental University.

The specialist also points out that kissing allows you to raise your spirits and improve your self-esteem. In addition, it releases other neurochemicals such as oxytocin, serotonin (in case of low levels of the neurotransmitter, this could be related to depression) or dopamine, hormones related to happiness.

Likewise, psychologist Pérez commented that Kisses are the universal language of love and they strengthen ties between everyone, so on this International Kissing Day we must begin to eradicate the beliefs and myths that exist around it since kisses are not exclusive to couples, Kisses are also of great importance in the ties between a father and mother towards their son or that of a grandmother towards her grandson.”.
