What day is it today in Ukraine and the world

July 21 in Ukraine and the world celebrate International junk food day. Junk food is often referred to as “empty calories”. It only loads the body with a large amount of fat, salt and sugar, while containing few vitamins, dietary fiber, and minerals. These are usually considered to be hamburgers, sweets, confectionery, sugary drinks, french fries, etc. There is a lot of information about the dangers of junk food, so more and more people are trying to eliminate it from the diet. However, there is one special day of the year when you can afford to deviate from the principles of healthy eating and treat yourself to something tasty, but not healthy.

Andrew F. Smith, culinary historian and author of Fast Food and Junk Food, believes that the era of junk food began with the modernization of flour mills in the 1820s. Thanks to new grinding technologies, inexpensive and affordable white refined grains have appeared. Until now, it is used to make rolls, snacks and cookies with a low cell content and a high carbohydrate content.

Due to the growth of industrial enterprises, people began to move from the countryside to the cities. A large number of hungry workers wanted a quick and cheap meal at lunchtime. Naturally, the first fast food appeared almost immediately. For example, in 1893 the brothers Frederick and Louis Rückheim created Cracker Jack. It was a salty mix of sticks, popcorn and peanuts. The product was even introduced at the World’s Fair in Chicago and by 1916 it had become the most popular snack in the country.

Unhealthy food began to gain a bad reputation only in the 1970s, when scientific studies were carried out on the effect of preservatives, salt, and sugar on the human body. At the same time, microbiologist Michael Jacobson coined the term “junk food”. However, the phrase became popular only in 1976 with the release of the song “Junk Food Junkie” by Larry Grouse.
