International Journalists’ Federation Reports 120 Journalists Killed in 2023, Majority in Gaza Strip

Dec 31, 2023 at 6:00 PM Update: an hour ago

In 2023, 120 journalists have died on the job, reports the international journalists’ federation IFJ. More than two-thirds of them were killed in the Gaza Strip.

In Europe, 3 journalists were killed: 2 in the war in Ukraine and 1 in Albania. On December 8, the IFJ spoke of 94 deceased journalists. Due to the ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip, this number increased to 120.

“While no story is worth a journalist’s life, they are often targeted deliberately to cover up stories,” said IFJ Secretary General Anthony Bellanger.

That is why the IFJ calls on the international community and governments to draw up a binding treaty that ensures the safety and independence of journalists.

“It is a democratic right of citizens to be well informed. It is the responsibility of governments to protect journalists so that they can report independently,” says Bellanger.
