The debate about the requirement for women’s beach volleyball and handball teams to wear bikini bottoms and crop tops has brought about a rule change.
According to the news of The Guardian, the International Handball Federation, which sentenced the Norway national women’s beach handball team for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms in a match, changed its rules on uniforms when it was heavily exposed to sexism accusations. The UHF allowed female athletes to wear cycling shorts and a tank top tank top.
The handball agenda has been on the agenda since July, when the European Handball Federation (AHF) fined the Norwegian national women’s beach handball team 1500 euros for wearing shorts like their male counterparts in the Euro 21 tournament against Bulgaria.
After months of calls for executives to resign after the AHF described female athletes’ preference for wearing shorts at that match as “dressing inappropriately”, it was revealed that the UHF had quietly changed its beach handball regulation in mid-October.
In the new regulation, it is stated that female athletes “must wear tight and short trousers that fit their bodies”, while male athletes will continue to “wear normal shorts 10 cm above the knees, provided that they are not too loose”.
