International experts in Luanda work on engineering the future of Africa

Several international experts are in conclave from September 9 to 13 in Luanda, the Angolan capital, to analyze the role of engineers in solving the challenges of the African continent, including the supply of drinking water, sustainable housing and climate change.

These experts, coming from several countries, are meeting within the framework of the 8th Conference and the 10th UNESCO Engineering Week in Africa, organized under the theme “Designing the future, innovative infrastructure solutions for a sustainable Africa and an accelerated African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)”.

Several topics will be covered during these two events, including “Engineering of the future: innovative infrastructure solution for a sustainable Africa”, “Sustainability and innovative infrastructure”, “Engineering and acceleration of the implementation of AfCFTA” and “Education and training of engineers”.

In a statement to the press, the Executive Secretary of the College of Civil Engineering of the Order of Engineers of Angola, Joelson de Matos, indicated that the objective of this conference is to examine how infrastructure development can be undertaken in a sustainable manner to help industrialize the continent and improve the standard of living of African citizens.

It also aims to educate African youth and the public about the engineering profession, with awareness seminars on the role of engineers in society, he said, adding that Angola is hosting these two events for the first time.

Since its inception in 2014, UNESCO Africa Engineering Week has been held in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
