International exchange in educational research at a glance
Even if educational research is often concentrated on individual countries, the respective research topics are often similar in an international comparison. This is shown by the new anthology “International Perspectives on School Settings, Education Policy and Digital Strategies. A Transatlantic Discourse in Education Research. ”It was edited by Dr. Annika Wilmers and Dr. Sieglinde Jornitz from the DIPF service point “ice – International Cooperation in Education”. The authors discuss the current state of research on the basis of six topics. The anthology is freely available as an open access publication on the Internet.
“The educational systems in Europe, Australia and North America with their respective specific characteristics are facing similar challenges,” says DIPF researcher Dr. Annika Wilmers. “These include, for example, digitization, migration, but also the question of how to react appropriately to international school performance comparisons such as PISA. These challenges in turn become the subject of educational research, which is why an exchange across national borders is worthwhile. “
Since 2015, the ice service point has organized international panels on current topics in educational research at the annual meetings of the American Educational Research Association. This has created an important forum for transatlantic exchange, explains co-editor Dr. Sieglinde Jornitz, who is also researching at DIPF. “At the same time, it has been shown again and again how different approaches and conceptual systems are in some cases from educational scientists from different countries. In this respect, international research is a necessary and enriching exchange in order to reflect on the individual’s own benchmarks and standards and to further develop empirical, theoretical and methodological approaches. “
The discussions of the past six years are reflected in the anthology. The work gives an overview of the topics: 1) school management and school development, 2) migration, refugees and public education, 3) international comparative studies and their effects on education policy, 4) administration and use of digital data in education, 5) economization of education, 6) challenge of translations.
The presentations address, for example, the steadily growing importance of data and standardized student performance for the optimization of education systems and the resulting accountability for politicians and teachers. At the same time, it can be seen that there is still relatively little knowledge of how school performance comparisons, subsequent educational reforms and ultimately the success of education are related. Another concern of the volume is to develop theoretical framework models for international analyzes and comparisons, as is done, for example, in the chapters on school development or on the subject of migration and refugees in education systems.
The anthology published by Barbara Budrich Verlag is freely accessible on the Internet and is under a Creative Commons license.
