In addition to the most important directors, screenwriters and actors, four-legged stars also receive awards at the Cannes Film Festival. On the occasion of International Dog Day on Monday, we remind you which animals have won the prestigious distinction – the Dog Palm – in recent years.
The Cannes Palme d’Or has for years symbolized the highest film art of its owner. It opens the way for creators to a career, helps them break through in the Oscar race. However in recent years, a less formal distinction awarded during the festival – the Psia Palma – has been gaining increasing importance. The award was created in 2001 by British film journalist Toby Rose, who is an animal lover. He came to Cannes every year with his dog Muttley. The fox terrier participated in interviews with filmmakers and eventually gained star status. He passed away in 2007, but he has permanently etched himself into the history of the festival. The Dog Palm – in fact a collar – was intended to draw the public’s attention to the best four-legged actors. The jury, composed of renowned film critics, decides who will receive it..
That the Dog Palm can be a ticket to fame was something Messi, the four-legged star of “Anatomy of a Fall,” directed by Justine Triet, found out last year. The charming border collie played Snoop, the guide of a blind boy whose mother (Sandra Hüller) was accused of murdering her husband. The dog won the collar, and Triet the Palme d’Or. In the winter, he travelled with the team to Hollywood, where he got involved in the film’s Oscar campaign. He was the life of the party at parties. He was happy to be photographed with Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling and Billie Eilish, among others. He also had a seat of honour in the audience at the Oscars. In May this year, he returned to Cannes, where he posed on the red carpet. Messi’s owner, dog trainer Laura Martin Contini, however, assures that the soda water did not go to her four-legged friend’s head. “He is completely unaware of his fame,” she told the Guardian.
Science has proven that dogs resemble their owners – they have similar personality traits and react similarly to various stimuli. It turns out that some also exhibit talents identical to their owners. This applies to Rosa, her sister Dora and Snowbear’s grandson – Tilda Swinton’s English springer spaniels, who in 2021 appeared with the famous actress and her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne in Joanna Hogg’s “The Keepsake: Part II”. They played Tilda’s dogs so spectacularly that the jury honored them with the Dog Palm. They were represented at the awards ceremony by their owner. “I have to admit that we’ve been eyeing this award for years. We knew we had to win it. I’ve been trying to get my dogs here, but they’re very busy. I heard they’re on a beach in the Highlands in Scotland. I think their careers are going to take off now,” Swinton said, according to Vanity Fair.
In 2019, Cannes went crazy about Sayuri, who could be seen in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. Quentin Tarantino gave her the role of Brandy, the pitbull of stuntman Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt. This is a very demanding task – the dog appears, among others, in a key scene of the fight with Charles Manson’s cult and thwarts the massacre at the villa of Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate, thus changing the course of history.. Sayuri did not come to Cannes, leaving the promotion of the film to people. Tarantino accepted the award on her behalf. “I told everyone that I had no idea whether we would get the Palme d’Or. I did not feel entitled to it. But I believed that we had a chance for the Dog Palme. I would like to dedicate this award to my wonderful actress Sayuri. She is the one who will bring the Dog Palme d’Or to the United States,” emphasized the director, quoted by the “National Post”.
Earlier, in 2015, Psia Palma landed in the paws of a border collie from Ireland, Jaro. He gained recognition in the film community thanks to his role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Lobster”, where he created the character of Bob – a dog of David (played by Colin Farrell), who, as the plot progresses, turns out to be his brother after being reincarnated.. Jaro’s stunt double was his son Ryac. Recalling the work on the set, the dog’s owner and trainer Julie Holmes explained that she accompanied the four-legged friends to every scene. “I hid somewhere every time – under the bed, in the wardrobe, behind the shower curtain or under the seat. This allowed me to give the dogs verbal or visual commands. It turned out that Jaro had a natural talent for acting. After a while, the producer christened him “Jaro One Take” because – unlike humans, who sometimes make mistakes – he didn’t need doubles. I’m not including the scene where Jaro had to sit for a long time between two long curtains, doing nothing else. He got bored of it after the fourth retake, so he turned his head and started playing curtain-pulling,” Holmes admitted in an interview with “OurDogs Ireland”.
One of the first winners of the award was a pug named Mops, who won the hearts of viewers as the dog of the teenage daughter of the Habsburg family in Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette”. This year, Kodi joined the group of honorees – the film Cosmos in “Le process du chien” (English: “Dog on Trial”), accused of biting three people.“Kodi appears in the credits and on the poster of the film. The Dog Palm is a serious award because it says a lot about the status of animals and all the beautiful roles that dogs play. The writers and directors show interest in the place of animals in our society,” the film’s director Laetitia Dosch noted in an interview with the Associated Press.
