Since October 1 was the International Day of Senior Citizens, the senior citizens of Liepāja are also celebrating it this week with various events. Residents of the residential home for the elderly will celebrate this holiday on October 3, at the same time paying tribute to the home’s round anniversaries, but this week both musical, sports, entertaining and educational joint events are planned in both Social Service Day Centers, public relations specialist Gunta Jākobsone informed the portal.
On the eve of Senior Citizens’ Day – on September 29, in the “Civita Nova” art room of Liepaja’s “Lielais dzintars” concert hall, the exhibition “Milk diaries. Dementia in statistics and stories” by new media artist, Liepaja University assistant professor Anna Priedola, which tells about aging, loneliness and dementia and which can be viewed by anyone interested until November 3. In addition to the exhibition, three “Dementia data workshops” are planned, and residents of the Social Service’s residential home for the elderly are also involved in this art project.
The first workshop at the Old People’s Home was held on September 30, where seven seniors, under the guidance of art mediators from the Center for Contemporary Art, created their own recipes for promoting cognitive health from various everyday and familiar food products. They could be both viewed and tasted, getting to know the challenges posed by the aging of the body in an attractive and relaxed way. Data visualizations using food as material are an indirect way of showing the irreversible processes of cognitive degradation, identity and relationship breakdown associated with dementia.
The next workshops in the Old People’s House will be held on October 21, and on November 4, the seniors plan to go to the end of the exhibition in the “Lielais dzintars” concert hall. By revealing these natural processes, the artist invites the general public to think about such stigmatized topics as dementia and other challenges that have to be faced with aging.
On Monday, October 2, at 2 p.m., an event dedicated to the International Senior Citizens’ Day will be held in the hall of the old people’s residential home, as part of which the home’s 2023 round anniversaries will also be traditionally greeted.
On Wednesday, October 4, at 1 p.m., an event dedicated to Seniors’ Day will be held at the Pensioners’ Day Center on Klaipėdas street 96a with a concert by the vocal ensemble “Kurzemīte” and a joyful joint singing for all who want and like to sing. From October 2, Ritma Kluce started working as an administrator at the Pensioners’ Day Center, who took over the baton from the center’s long-time manager, Astridas Vērdiņa, and who has various ideas on how to diversify the center’s offer, involving more interested parties.
The next public event at the pensioners’ day center on Klaipėda street “Autumn moods” is planned for October 17 at 1 p.m., where poetry will be read by Ārika Birzkop and Andris Kūla, and music will be performed by Mirdza Grauduža, who also recently published her song book. On the other hand, on October 24 at 1 p.m., a meeting and conversation with Liepāja artist Aivaras Klein is planned.
On October 5, at 11.30 a.m., the Karosta Pensioners’ Day Center invites everyone to a joint educational hike with and without poles, the destination of which is the Karosta Water Tower, which seniors will have the opportunity to see and get to know this facility under the guidance of a guide. The purpose of the day centers for pensioners is to provide free services, giving pensioners the opportunity to enrich their social life, to integrate more fully into the life of society, by involving them in various activities, according to their state of health, mental and physical abilities.
The target audience is pensioners who want to participate in social activities, regardless of their age, gender, nationality, social status, political and religious affiliation.
