International Day of Peace: Yali for Peace says no to the crackling of weapons in Africa

While Africa is in the grip of multiple conflicts, Yali for Peace volunteers have mobilized in Cameroon and Ivory Coast to demand a return to peace in Africa.

Around thirty young people gathered on Saturday September 23, 2023 in Yaoundé as part of a sports session coupled with awareness raising on peace and social cohesion. This activity organized by Yali for Peace simultaneously in Cameroon and Ivory Coast marked the commemoration of the International Day of Peace, observed on September 21, 2023 on the theme “Action in favor of peace: our ambitions for the #GlobalGoals” .

« We hear the crackling of weapons in several African countries. More than ever, African youth must mobilize to campaign for peace. Otherwise, our future is ruined. We have the responsibility and obligation to create a peaceful world for our future and for generations to come », declared Luchelle Feukeng, General Coordinator of Yali for Peace.

“Our message during this mobilization is clear: We want fewer weapons and more peace in our communities and societies. It is possible to have more calm in Africa, if at least we all contribute intentionally, in every action we take on a daily basis. In Cameroon as in Ivory Coast where around thirty young people also mobilized for the demonstration, the message was the same because the realities are almost the same on both sides on our continent. » adds Luchelle Feukeng.

The International Day of Peace was commemorated in 2023 in a tense context in Africa with a series of coups occurring in a few months in Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso, etc. In Cameroon, the crisis in the South-West and North-West regions has already caused nearly 6,000 deaths as well as extensive material damage.

Yali for Peace is the thematic network bringing together former Yali program fellows interested in peace and security issues. Founded in 2022, the network is present in 15 African countries.
